OK, so how can a breeder advocate spaying and neutering?

Loxly's Lunar Eclipse, black maine coon male kittenI breed so that I can help make the maine coon breed a better breed of cat.  This doesn't just mean I take two cats and put them together and let them make kittens.  It doesn't mean that I have male and females running around together mating indiscriminately.  It does mean that I study pedigrees, that I go to cat shows (in my case I show in CFA), it means my boys live separately from my girls (none are caged).  That doesn't mean I think everyone should be a breeder. It doesn't mean I think every cat I produce is perfect show quality and should be reproducing also.  One of the great things about CFA is that you can show cats that have been spayed and neutered! It is a great way to get introduced to the world of showing and meeting breeders and finding out what it's all about.  Many people who show cats DO NOT breed them.

If you get a female kitten from me you will agree to have her spayed at the appropriate age and you will not get her registration until I get a statement from your vet that she has been spayed.  If you get a male kitten from me he will be neutered before he leaves my house.  You will get them when they are 12 - 16 weeks old.  And all my cats must always remain as INDOOR only cats.  The outdoors is not safe for a cat in today's society. Plus these cats are not trained by their parents on how to live outdoors.  They trust everything in their environment and we all know you can not trust all beings and machines they would encounter outdoors.

Spaying and Neutering is healthier for the cats, makes them happier companions and helps curb the explosion of UNWANTED kittens.  The cats I breed are now popular, if it gets to a point that I have more kittens than I can sell I will stop breeding.  I breed to make a better cat, if I'm not doing that, then that pair of cats does not continue to breed.

Thinking that letting a female have a litter so you can "make back the money" you spent to get her is a fallacy at best.  By the time you pay all the costs involved with having a pregnant cat, raising the kittens, taking them all to the vet for check ups and shots you will realize that breeding is NOT a profitable enterprise.   Far from it, responsible breeders put more money into their cats than they could make in a lifetime of selling kittens.

Disclaimer:  Not all the cats pictured on this web site still live with us!!!  Most have lived with us at some point, but most have been a part of our breeding program and have moved on. I felt it was important to show the "cats behind the cats" that we have now and that have been part of our cats heritage and our lives.
